The Tim Card is Tim Hortons’ gift card, now sold as the Tims Gift Card. You can check its balance in the Tim Hortons app, on the Tims Gift Card website, by calling 1-866-TIM-CARD (1-866-846-2273), or by asking at the counter — the remaining balance also prints at the bottom of every receipt. How to Check Your Tim Card Balance
There are four ways, and they don’t all work equally well.
- In the Tim Hortons app. Once the card is added to the app, the balance shows on the Scan screen every time you open it. This is the fastest method and the only one that’s always in front of you.
- Online. The Tims Gift Card website shows the balance once you sign in to a Tim Hortons account and enter the 16-digit card number and 8-digit PIN. There’s no quick “enter a number, see a balance” box without an account.
- By phone. Call 1-866-TIM-CARD (1-866-846-2273). The same line handles reloads and card problems.
- At the counter. Any crew member can check it for you. After you pay with the card, the remaining balance prints at the bottom of the receipt.
Keep the receipt or check the app before a big order. A card with $4 left on it will cover a coffee and a donut, not a Take Twelve.
How to Add a Tim Card to the App
Tim Hortons recommends moving physical and digital gift cards into the app, where you can check the balance, reload and pay in one place.
- Open the Tim Hortons app and sign in.
- Go to the payment or Tim Card section and choose to add or transfer a gift card.
- Enter the 16-digit card number and the 8-digit PIN from the back of the card.
- The balance moves into the app’s digital Tim Card. The physical card is then at zero.
When you pay in the app, scan your Tims Rewards code in the same visit. Paying with a gift card and collecting Tims Rewards points are separate steps — the card pays for the order, the scan earns the points.
How to Register a Tim Card
Registering ties the card to your Tim Hortons account. It takes a minute on the Tims Gift Card website, and it’s what protects the balance if the card goes missing. An unregistered card works like cash: whoever holds it can spend it.
Adding a card to the app has the same effect, since the balance then sits inside your account.
How to Reload a Tim Card
- In the app: reload the digital Tim Card from a stored credit card, debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- Online: reload through the Tims Gift Card website.
- By phone: 1-866-TIM-CARD.
- In a restaurant: hand over the card and pay for the reload at the counter.
Auto-reload can be set up for both physical and digital cards through the Tims Gift Card website or the phone line, so the card tops itself up when the balance gets low. Do Tim Hortons Gift Cards Expire?
No. Tim Hortons has long sold the Tim Card with no expiry date, and most provinces — including Ontario, Québec and British Columbia — ban expiry dates on most retail gift cards anyway. A card found in a drawer from years ago should still carry its balance. If it doesn’t scan, the phone line can look it up by card number.
Can You Get Cash Back From a Tim Card?
No. Tim Card balances are spent on food and drinks, not cashed out. Small leftover balances can’t be refunded at the counter. The way to use up a few cents is to pay with the card first and cover the rest with another payment method — ask the crew to split the payment.
Can You Combine Tim Card Balances?
Yes, in practice. Transfer each card into the Tim Hortons app one at a time and the balances add up in the same digital Tim Card. It’s the easiest way to clear out several half-used cards from birthdays and office gift swaps.
Do Canadian Tim Cards Work in the US?
Generally no. Tim Hortons runs its US gift card program separately from the Canadian one, and balances are in different currencies. A card bought in Ontario is meant for Canadian restaurants. If you’re crossing the border, ask at the US restaurant before ordering, or use a credit card there instead.
Lost or Stolen Tim Card
If the card was registered or added to the app, the balance is tied to your account. Call 1-866-TIM-CARD as soon as you notice, and have the card number ready if you saved it — the balance can be protected and moved.
If the card was never registered, there’s usually nothing that can be recovered. Treat an unregistered card like a banknote, and photograph the back of any card you’re keeping so you have the number and PIN.
Tim Card Not Working
The usual causes, in order:
- Zero balance. Check the app or the last receipt before assuming a fault.
- Balance already moved to the app. Once a physical card is transferred, the plastic is empty and will decline at the counter. Pay from the app instead.
- Not activated. A card bought from a gift card rack is activated at the till when it’s paid for. If the cashier skipped that step, the card shows no value — take the receipt back to the store that sold it.
- Worn or damaged barcode. The crew can type the number in by hand.
- Wrong country. Canadian cards are for Canadian restaurants.
